Rhubarb Seating was approached by main contractor Bespoke Construction Services Ltd for support with luxury soft seating requirements for the prestigious St Joseph Snow Hill Wharf development. The apartment complex commissioned by Berkeley Homes Group offers high-quality residential properties within the urban, culture-rich city of Birmingham. Following successful delivery of this project, we were also appointed to design and supply bespoke seating for The Glasswater
Locks and The Green Quarter developments.
The Challenge
The procurement agent originally contracted for the Snowhill development to supply the loose FF&E for the project proved unable to satisfy the requirements. Our last-minute involvement in the project meant we were working to tight deadlines. We engaged straight away with the design team and project manager to understand the brief, the furniture specifications and room layouts. For the subsequent projects at Glasswater Locks and The Green Quarter, we needed to work closely with the interior designers to create bespoke pieces that suited the distinctive style they were seeking for each location.
Project Scope
The brief for all these projects was for ultimate comfort, luxury sofas, armchairs and lounge chairs for the main reception areas, cinema rooms, and lounge areas, together with the provision of side tables, coffee tables, scatter cushions, task chairs and meeting room chairs.
How we Delivered
Our Head of Design quickly set to work on the Snowhill project modifying the specifications of our standard range Hoxton and Kendra sofas to achieve a ‘Resi-mercial’ design. The plush and luxurious look and feel was achieved by adjusting the foam grade, creating deep cushioning for ultimate comfort. We supplied three upholstered seat cushions with different foam grades for the lead Quantity Surveyor and the Berkeley Homes project team to test prior to manufacture. In consultation with the client, we selected for all three projects the appropriate fabrics and colour palettes for all the seating supplied.
Snowhill had a tight deadline, but starting with a site visit, then moving to seating & fabric samples, drawings and designs and finally production and delivery to the client were all completed on time and to complete satisfaction within 5 weeks.

Bespoke Design
All three projects required the design of bespoke seating. The separate lounge area at Snow Hill Wharf saw us design a unit specifically to mirror the radius of a circular rug which resulted in a showstopping chaise lounge with luxury foams, velvet fabric, timeless curved contoured design and a touch of je ne sais quoi. The reception area at Glasswater Locks showcases the Segment Sofa – an eye-catching piece upholstered in red velvet. The Green Quarter saw the creation of the Harlan lounge chair, the Brompton Swivel armchair and a new sofa that fitted the overall design of the main communal space.
